The word’s contracted thus

“We only publish writers who
live in this State or write about it. You
appreciate that local knowledge -“. Hell
that’s hard to wear. I’ve always lived there. Though
I must admit I’ve been away a while – well
thirty years – as if that matters. There’s
another thing – this shorthand practise – I’s
(first person singular) in lower case and ands
contracted into ampersands. But let’s
be generous here. Perhaps he’s often pressed
for time and finds his shorthand handy and
in all his work I’ve read the ampersands
are easily the best.
