Deep Creek

The surface of this scoured, eroded road
is following the topsoil. Floods last May
promoted ruts to gullies, swept away
the floodway posts and concrete culverts. They’ve
replaced them all — again. The markers and
the causeway ramps might last another year —
provided there’s a drought. They haven’t changed
the hazard signs and nameplate yet, they stand
back well behind the water—line. That name
blends history and prophecy. This creek
was deep, is and always will be. Here
the creeks dig deeper every time it rains.
